Breskens is inextricably linked to the sea, but the sea can also be an enemy. That became clear in 1953, during the flood disaster. In Breskens a water level was measured of N.A.P. +4.80 meters. After the disaster, the government came up with a plan to strengthen the coast: the Delta Plan. In the 1970s, a dike was built around the harbour in Breskens, breaking the unity between the village and the harbour.
