12 Dijk Handelshaven

Bench 12 Dike Trading port

At the beginning of the last century, Breskens was an important trading port. The road network was not yet as extensive as it is now, so much was transported by ship, including to Rotterdam, Middelburg and Sas van Gent. The Second World War caused the port to be severely destroyed twice, but during the reconstruction the flow of goods quickly increased again. The port flourished, but due to the arrival of better transport options over land, freight traffic by ship quickly decreased.
