The cozy village centre of Breskens, ‘Spuiplein’, was a sluice basin until 1920. A sluice basin is a basin behind a dike and was used to fill up at high water and then to ‘drain’ again at low water, to empty it. Purging through a discharge sluice ensured that the harbour would not silt up. The dry sludge remained behind when the sluice basin dried up after purging. Today, Spuiplein is the place to stroll, shop, sit on the terrace, enjoy an ice cream and have a delicious dinner in the evening.
