Bench 10 The War Memorial

September 11, 1944 is etched in the memories of many citizens of Breskens. On that day the Allied forces bombed Breskens. The intention was to hit the harbour in order to make it impossible for the Germans to escape. But most of the bombs fell on the village itself, destroying almost everything. There were 186 civilian casualties. Jaap Keijmel was 8 years old at the time of the bombing. He lost an older sister and his twin brother. Mr Keijmel tells his personal story.
